A Picture of the Pont Des Arts at Night

A Picture of the Pont Des Arts at Night

This is a great place to hang out in Paris at night. My wife and I have met many other artists and had many discussions on this bridge. The location of the French Academy at the Institut de France makes this Parisien Bridge a very lively place to populate on a warm French evening.

Some Digital Night Photography, unusual for me ... but I like this one.

I was lining up my old Nikon Coolpix 950 and wondering what speed my digital camera would need to collect enough light from this contrasty scene. Then I spotted a bicycle in the distance and just opened the 'B' setting and tried to stop the shot prior to the bike leaving the frame ... and this is the result ... A bit odd, but nice I think.

An over-exposed night time photograph can provide an interest lighting perspective for your shots.

At night the light source is lower and more individual than pure sunlight. There is obviously still moonlight, but its effect is more of a backlight for your images. This image was taken using Ilford 400asa Black & White film and I think that I exposed it for 4 minutes at F11, being careful to use my lens cap to block out any lights from cars etc.

Another Long Exposure, controlling the light entering the lens with a lens cap.

This image took approximately 4 minutes to shoot. Many would question the need to take such a long time to expose a 400asa film ... but they get blurry shots ;-) Obviously, when you are taking such a long exposure image you will need to block out the lights caused by traffic. I use a lens cap every time that I hear a car approaching. In this image I thought that all I wanted was one light trail going from right to left, drawing the viewer into the image. Sadly the driver had a different plan and promptly performed a perfect 3 point turn and disappeared in the same direction that he entered the image.

I enjoy taking one photographic effect and reaching in to another. Take a lovely night time photograph, add a few lads hanging around doing nothing much and ask them to stand still for 30 seconds. This is the kind of result that you can expect ... what do you think ?

Some places only come to life at night. This water treatment building would be very un-impressive during daylight hours, but at night it is simply beautiful ... unfortunately nobody ever sees it then.

Taken with a Mamiya C220, a camera more at home with wedding photography. I love artificial lighting and I think that we take it for granted. During the day time we are given treated to light which seems to be provided with a Gods view in mind. At night we get to view the world from our own stand point.

For most of my life I have lived in cities in the UK, my holidays are spent visiting cities and even though I live deep in the countryside, my eye has always been excited by architectural forms. Today I'm going to list a few night photography images that I have taken with some lovely old bellows cameras from the 1930's - 1940's.
